After several years as a fire door supplier and member of the BWF-Certifire scheme, he started his own business, specialising in fire door compliance. He also managed the Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) between 2012 and 2016. He is widely considered as a leading authority on fire doors and fire door safety.
